Most Slabs Do Not Need Replacing

The usual advice on a bad-looking driveway is to break it out and pour a new one. That means demolition, disposal, a new pour, a cure period and a price that surprises most people.

In most cases it is unnecessary. If the slab is structurally sound, and the majority are even when they look terrible, the surface can be repaired and resurfaced on top of what is already there. You get a floor that looks new, for a fraction of what replacement costs, and without the driveway being out of action for weeks.

What Resurfacing Deals With

Surface wear and dullness
Slabs that have gone grey, chalky and lifeless from years of sun and traffic.

Staining
Oil, rust, leaf tannin, fertiliser burn and general discolouration that will not come off with pressure washing.

Cracking
Cracks get cut out, filled and repaired before anything goes over the top. Where a crack is structural or still moving we will tell you, because resurfacing will not stop it.

Spalling and pitting
Where the surface has flaked away and left rough, pockmarked concrete. Common around dock edges, driveway entries and anywhere salt has been involved.

Bad patches and previous repairs
Mismatched patches, old repairs and colour differences all get evened out.

A finish you never liked
Sometimes there is nothing wrong with the slab at all. It is just plain, or the wrong colour, or the wrong texture for how the space is used now.

Colour matched

Matched to the house, the paving, the roof or an adjacent slab. This is what most driveway and patio jobs come down to.

Patterns and stencil work

Using stencils on the resurfaced slab we can produce brick, tile, slate, cobble and geometric patterns. It is one of the few ways to get a paved appearance without pavers and the movement that comes with them.

Decorative finishes

Stone look, washed concrete look and wood look, built with the same trowel and staining techniques we use on interior decorative work.

Plain sealed

Sometimes the right answer is a clean, evenly coloured, sealed slab and nothing more.

Non-slip

Driveways slope and paths get wet. Grip can be built in where the fall or the use warrants it.

Where Resurfacing Works

Driveways, the most common residential job and where the saving against replacement is largest. Patios, courtyards and alfresco areas, often done alongside the driveway. Paths, verandahs and porches, including narrow and awkward areas where a new pour is impractical. Pool surrounds, resurfaced and finished with grip suited to bare wet feet. Car parks and commercial hardstand, where replacement means closing the site. Warehouse and factory floors, either as preparation before a coating or as the finish itself.

When We Will Tell You To Replace It

Resurfacing works on a sound slab. It does not fix a failing one, and we would rather say that at the site visit than after you have paid.

Signs the slab itself is the problem: sections sitting at different heights, cracks that are still opening, large areas that sound hollow when tapped, or concrete that crumbles when you scratch it. Those are structural issues, and putting a new surface on top hides them for a season and then they come back through.

We will tell you which situation you have. If it needs replacing, we will say so.

    Walk on it after 24 hours. Wait one to two weeks before driving on a resurfaced driveway.

Concrete Resurfacing Questions

Considerably, because there is no demolition, no disposal and no new pour. The exact figure depends on the condition of the slab and how much repair work it needs, which is what the site visit is for.

Usually two to three days on site depending on size and how much repair is needed. Then one to two weeks before you drive on it.

Repaired cracks that were not moving stay repaired. A crack that is still moving will eventually show again, which is why we assess that before quoting rather than after. If yours is moving, we will tell you.

Yes. We bring samples to the site visit so you can see them against the brickwork, the roof or the paving in daylight.

Yes, using stencil work on the resurfaced slab. You get the pattern without pavers shifting, sinking or growing weeds through the joints.

Not if it is specified with grip. Driveways slope and pool surrounds get wet, and both usually warrant some texture.
