This is the part that matters most outdoors, and it is the part most people do not think about until after the floor is down.
An alfresco that stays dry needs very little texture. A pool surround needs a lot, because it is wet, it is walked on barefoot, and people move quickly around it. A slab that falls toward the house, or a step down into a garden, needs more again.
We set the grip level area by area rather than across the whole floor. Aggregate is built into the coating so it does not wear off, and we balance it against keeping the surface comfortable on bare feet and easy to sweep.

Walk on it after 24 hours. Keep furniture off for two to three days. Full cure takes one to two weeks.

Will it fade in the sun?
Not with a UV-stable system, which is what goes down outdoors. Using an indoor product outside is the main reason alfresco coatings yellow and chalk, and it is a specification mistake rather than a limitation of the product.
Can you coat over my existing pavers or tiles?
Tiles, usually yes – they get diamond ground first, then a self-levelling coat fills the grout lines before coating. Pavers are harder, because they move independently and any movement will telegraph through. We will tell you at the site visit which situation you have.
Will it be too hot to walk on?
Lighter finishes reflect heat rather than absorb it, so they run cooler than dark pavers or dark tiles. Around a pool we would steer you toward a lighter tone for exactly that reason.
Is it slippery when wet?
Only if it is specified without grip. We build aggregate into the coating and set the level to match the area – heavier around a pool, lighter under a covered alfresco.
What about pool chemicals and sunscreen?
Both are handled. Chlorine, salt and sunscreen sit on the surface and hose off rather than staining.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the area, the condition of the slab and the finish. Preparation is what moves the price – a sound slab is straightforward, one with cracking or old sealer takes more work. We quote after looking at it.
Can you match it to inside the house?
Yes, and it is one of the more popular things we do. Carrying a wood look or stone look from an indoor floor out to the alfresco makes both spaces feel bigger.
How long does it last?
Ten to twenty years outdoors when the slab was prepared properly and the system was specified for UV exposure.
What if my slab has cracks?
Cracks get cut out, filled and repaired before coating. If a crack is still moving we will say so, because a coating will not stop it.
